What is it?
Flickr is an online photo-hosting/photo-sharing website owned by Yahoo.

Recommended Use for Artists
Flickr is great for sharing images, particularly ones which you want to upload using your phone (just be careful of the charges your cell phone carrier has for multimedia messages!). It is not highly recommended for images for which you want to retain full copyright control.

Copyright Protection
Although Flickr offers various licensing options and download controls for your images, many have reported their images being stolen anyway. This, of course, is not a problem limited to Flickr, but people are more likely to see it as a stock image repository because of all of the user content on it (regardless of whether that is an accurate perception). Flickr also allows copryight holders to file reports of their copyrighted materials found on users' accounts, via Yahoo's standard copyright reporting process.

Creating an Account
Now that Flickr is owned by Yahoo, new accounts with Flickr are created with Yahoo accounts.

If you already have a Yahoo account, you can simply log into Flickr with your existing Yahoo account. When you first log into Flickr with your Yahoo ID, they'll ask you whether to create a new Flickr account or link your Yahoo account with an existing Flickr account. After confirming that you want to create a new Flickr account, you will need to log into Flickr again.

Uploading Photos
Using the Flickr website, you can only upload five photos at a time. Flickr also has a set of tools which can be used for uploading more photos in a batch. Their Flickr Uploadr works on Windows and Mac OS X, and they also have an iPhoto plugin for Mac OS X. A free, third-party application, jUploadr, is also available for Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.
