Databases generally require a host program to work. Developing a standalone database for artists is something that is too big of a project for e-eAsel at this time, due to lack of programming resources (e-eAsel is currently being operated by sculptress Julianna Yau --- if you can help, please contact her).
Most database programs, such as Microsoft Access or Filemaker, are expensive options. Because artists generally don't have extra money to spend on that software, OpenOffice.org is a great alternative. OpenOffice.org is free, and works on Macs, Windows, Linux and Sun Solaris.
